Welcome to Whitby’s iconic Dames of the road, Elizabeth the Steam Bus and Charlotte the Charabanc.
As well as being wonderful relics of an age long gone, these two old ladies still delight hundreds of thousands of people every year as they ply their routes around the town.
Nowhere else in the country, continent or even the western world can you find a Steam Bus still working full time for a living, or you can buy a ticket for a trip on a public road.
Find out how you could get to spend a day in Elizabeth’s cab as Fireman, with Vern, who is a widely acknowledged steam traction instructor, not to mention his film and television career.
Many people have now taken the opportunity to spend a day with Elizabeth and her family. You can’t get much closer than a full day up in the cab with Vern, helping to make it all happen.
Elizabeth works from February Half Term until the first weekend of November. Also from Boxing Day until New Years Day. Also many weekends in January and February if the weather is suitable Charlotte works during the Summer months, as well as Bank Holidays (weather permiting).
All trips depart from the Bandstand on Pier Road, by the Lifeboat Museum and last for around 20 minutes. In each case you will hear the 'girls' stories and on Charlotte you are treated to a sing along with some songs from when she was a youngster.
